It’s a rare occasion when SpaceX’s towering Starship vehicle plays second fiddle in a photograph.
Yet, this extraordinary event occurred, all thanks to the breathtaking natural surroundings of Starbase, SpaceX’s coastal facility in South Texas. The company recently captured this mesmerizing scenery in a photograph featuring Starship on the launch pad. In this image, the colossal rocket is set against the backdrop of turquoise waters of a shallow bay, with sandy wetlands stretching out and the deeper-blue Gulf of Mexico beyond.
In a September 30 post on X (formerly Twitter), featuring this photo, SpaceX commented, “Starship stacked at Starbase ahead of flight, team continues to work with the FAA on a launch license.” The FAA here refers to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
As noted in the post, SpaceX is gearing up for the second-ever launch of Starship. The initial mission, which took place last April, intended to send the upper stage of the vehicle partially around Earth, with a planned splashdown near Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.
However, that mission didn’t go as planned. Starship encountered several issues shortly after launch, including a failure of the two stages to separate, leading SpaceX to intentionally detonate the vehicle high above the Gulf of Mexico.
While the FAA recently concluded its investigation into the April incident, it has not yet granted a license for the upcoming second launch, which shares similar objectives with the first. Additionally, SpaceX must secure environmental approval from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as reported by Reuters.
SpaceX is expected to launch soon after meeting these requirements. Elon Musk, the company’s founder and CEO, has affirmed that Starship is technically ready for flight.
Starship stands as the largest and most powerful rocket ever constructed, boasting nearly twice the thrust at liftoff compared to NASA’s Space Launch System, the mightiest launcher currently in operation.
This SpaceX vehicle is also designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, a groundbreaking development crucial for making economically feasible ventures like Mars colonization and other audacious exploration endeavors, according to Musk.
