Steelers Part Ways with Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada After Struggles
The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Matt Canada amid a challenging season. Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed the difficulty of the decision, emphasizing his respect for Canada. Following the firing, quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan and running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will jointly handle coordinator duties, with Faulkner serving as the interim OC and Sullivan managing play-calling responsibilities.
Canada, initially hired as quarterbacks coach in 2020 and promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021, failed to elevate the team’s offense as anticipated. Despite high expectations for a modernized approach, the Steelers experienced inconsistency and a lack of cohesion under Canada’s guidance. In his 44 games as OC, the team never ranked higher than 23rd in yards and 21st in points. The current season sees the Steelers at 28th in both yards and points.
The decision to part ways with Canada comes after a disappointing 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, where the offense struggled to generate significant yardage. The team’s performance, along with persistent offensive challenges throughout Canada’s tenure, contributed to the timing of the decision.
Despite the coaching change, Tomlin reaffirmed his faith in starting quarterback Kenny Pickett, citing his daily observations of Pickett’s dedication and predicting positive growth. The Steelers, standing at 6-4 and ranking 7th in the AFC, hope the coaching adjustment will bring improvements as they navigate the remainder of the season.
