December 9, 2023
In a recent announcement, Governor Maura T. Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll have put forth the names of three highly qualified attorneys for consideration as justices in the Probate and Family Court. The nominees—Manisha Hemendra Bhatt, Bernadette Stark, and Michelle A. Yee—bring diverse and extensive experiences to the table.
Manisha Hemendra Bhatt: With 22 years of experience representing indigent clients in probate and family matters, Attorney Bhatt has been a stalwart advocate for limited English-speaking immigrants across Massachusetts. As the former President of the South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston, she played a key role in establishing the “Know Your Rights” program, an award-winning initiative promoting access to justice within the South Asian community.
Bernadette Stark: Attorney Stark boasts a rich background in both probate and family court matters and civil litigation. Her commitment to access to justice earned her the Senior Partners for Justice’s 2010 Gideon’s Trumpet Award. Growing up in a neighborhood affected by gang violence, Attorney Stark’s lived experiences uniquely equip her to navigate the complexities of the court system. Currently serving as the Director of the Student Legal Services Office at UMass Amherst, she continues her dedication to helping families in crisis.
Michelle A. Yee: With over 18 years of service in the Probate and Family Court system, Attorney Yee has been a key figure in the implementation of the Pathways Case Management Initiative. Her roles include Senior Program Manager in the Administrative Office of the Probate and Family Court, Judicial Case Manager, and Massachusetts Uniform Probate Code (“MUPC”) Magistrate. A daughter of Filipino and Chinese immigrants, Attorney Yee’s diverse background enriches her understanding of the court’s operations.
The nominees will undergo consideration by the Governor’s Council for confirmation. Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll express their enthusiasm for these candidates, highlighting their commitment to justice and their potential contributions to the Probate and Family Court.
