Historic Lutsen Resort Ravaged by Fire

The iconic Lutsen Resort, a historic landmark along Lake Superior, fell victim to a devastating fire in the early hours of February 6. The blaze, which engulfed the main lodge, was first reported around 12:24 a.m. by staff who noticed smoke emanating from the lobby area. Despite the rapid response from multiple fire departments, including Lutsen, Tofte, Grand Marais, and others, the building succumbed to the flames.

According to Lutsen Fire Chief Steve Duclos, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation by the State Fire Marshal is underway. The loss is particularly poignant given the resort’s rich history, dating back to its establishment in the mid-1880s. Over the years, it has passed through various hands of ownership, each contributing to its legacy.

The tragedy comes at a time when the resort was undergoing renovations under the stewardship of owner Bryce Campbell. Plans were underway to expand the main lodge, adding new spaces and wings to enhance the guest experience. However, the fire marks the latest in a series of setbacks, with previous blazes occurring in 1949 and 1951.

Despite the devastation, there were no reported injuries, as the resort was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The community rallied around the firefighters, with Cascade Lodge providing meals and refreshments to sustain their efforts. Messages of support poured in from Visit Cook County Executive Director Linda Jurek and others, expressing solidarity with the resort’s owners and staff.

As the smoke clears and the extent of the damage becomes apparent, the road to recovery will be long and arduous. Yet, amidst the ashes, there remains a glimmer of hope. In a Facebook post, Lutsen Resort vowed to rebuild, echoing the sentiment of resilience that has defined its legacy for over a century.

Stay tuned for updates as the community comes together to support the restoration efforts of this beloved landmark.
