Celebrating Lunar New Year in California
In a proclamation issued by Governor Gavin Newsom, February 10, 2024, is declared as Lunar New Year in California. The proclamation celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities to the state and the nation. It acknowledges the historical struggles of these communities against racism and discrimination, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and inclusion.
Recognizing the vibrant diversity of California, the proclamation reflects on the state’s decision to officially recognize Lunar New Year as a holiday last year. It pays tribute to the memory of those lost, particularly in the tragedy in Monterey Park, and honors the survivors and their families.
As the Year of the Dragon commences, the proclamation extends wishes of happiness and good fortune to all, while urging support for AAPI friends, family, and neighbors. It concludes with Governor Newsom’s official declaration of Lunar New Year and his signature alongside the Great Seal of California.
The proclamation underscores California’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and fostering a sense of unity and respect among its residents.
