Ramadan 2024: Anticipation Grows in UAE
Muslims in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan. As per the announcement by the country’s moon sighting committee, the crescent moon is expected to be visible on Sunday evening, March 10. This sighting, once confirmed, will officially signify the commencement of Ramadan, a period of spiritual reflection and fasting observed by Muslims worldwide.
Ramadan holds immense significance in the Islamic lunar calendar, being the ninth month. It is a time for Muslims to engage in deep introspection, fasting from dawn to dusk, increased prayer, and acts of charity. The observance of Ramadan serves as a means for individuals to strengthen their connection with Allah (God) and enhance their self-discipline.
The month of Ramadan marks the period when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and it is a time for Muslims to demonstrate self-restraint, empathy towards the less fortunate, and generosity towards others. Families and communities come together for evening meals (Iftar) after sunset and pre-dawn meals (Suhoor) before sunrise. Additionally, mosques witness increased attendance for nightly prayers (Taraweeh).
The UAE, like many Islamic nations, relies on the sighting of the crescent moon to determine the beginning and end of Ramadan. Comprising religious scholars and astronomers, the moon sighting committee convenes to verify sightings reported by the public. Should the crescent moon be confirmed on Sunday, March 10th, it will signal the start of Ramadan in the UAE.
This year, Saudi Arabia’s moon sighting committee also anticipates the crescent moon’s visibility on the same evening, indicating a synchronized commencement of Ramadan across the region.
As anticipation mounts, Muslims in the UAE prepare to embark on a month-long journey of spiritual growth, self-discipline, and communal unity as they observe the sacred traditions of Ramadan.
