Why Do We Spend Our Whole Life Trying to Forget Someone?
We all make connections with people throughout our lives. Some are positive, others less so. Unfortunately, some relationships may end, often leaving us feeling sad or hurt. But why does it take so long for us to forget someone who has been an important part of our life?
It could be argued that the emotional bond we form with people is difficult to break. We get comfortable with them, so when they are no longer part of our life, it is hard to accept the loss. The emotions and memories are so strong, we cling on, refusing to let go. Even though we try to move on, a part of us is still left in the past.
Time alone cannot always be relied on to help us forget someone. There are those that have moved on in the past, yet continue to think about those they left behind. People’s minds have the ability to re-access those feelings, reigniting all of those intense emotions. So, the real answer to forgetting someone might be finding the strength and courage to look beyond the pain and make new connections.
Only then can we be released from our inner turmoil, as we break away from the shackles of the past and move on to something better. Though it can be difficult to achieve, by putting in the effort, we can ultimately free ourselves of any guilt, pain or regret and make room for new people and experiences.
In essence, no matter how difficult it may be to forget someone, we should keep our focus on the future and not let our emotions keep us from the potential for positive change. After all, the past should stay in the past, not dictate our present or our future.
