The Power of Distance in Love
Do you ever find yourself struggling to accept the changes that life inevitably brings? This can be particularly hard when it comes to matters of the heart. When we invest ourselves in loving someone, there is no way to avoid the various changes that come with a relationship.
That is why I have found great comfort in embracing the idea of distance. Instead of allowing the fear of change to drive me away from a person I love, I try to maintain a respectful distance so I can observe the transformation of the relationship in a calm and peaceful manner.
The distance that I practice gives me the chance to remain engaged in the relationship while maintaining some emotional separation. From this safe distance, I can still remain in touch with my true feelings. Even when a relationship or situation evolves beyond what I had expected or hoped, this space still allows me to recognize and appreciate the depth of emotion that still exists.
The power of distance also helps us recognize when something is slipping away, even when it has become difficult to notice in our everyday lives. The seemingly immutable foundation that is shared by two people may gradually begin to crumble, yet, through the wise and generous lens of distance, these small changes can be seen before it is too late.
As much as we may fear and attempt to resist it, life is made of change. Through finding a peaceful middle ground between complete emotional separation and living completely invested in someone, I have been able to truly learn the art of love in its ever changing state.
