Sigiriya Fortress Tour
Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located in central Sri Lanka, about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Colombo. It was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, who made it his capital and palace complex.
The fortress is located on top of a massive 200-meter (660-foot) tall rock formation, which provides commanding views of the surrounding area. The complex includes water gardens, frescoes, and impressive feats of engineering, such as the famous Lion Staircase.
The frescoes at Sigiriya are particularly noteworthy and depict a variety of beautiful women, believed to be the king’s wives and concubines. The paintings are well-preserved and are considered to be some of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan art.
Sigiriya is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist destination. It is also known as the “Lion Rock” due to the lion-shaped gateway that once guarded the entrance to the palace complex.
