Himeji Castle Treasure
Himeji Castle is a Japanese castle located in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It is also known as the “White Heron Castle” due to its brilliant white exterior and resemblance to a bird taking flight.
Himeji Castle is considered one of Japan’s most significant cultural treasures and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle dates back to 1333, although the current structure was built in the 17th century during the Edo period. The castle’s design is renowned for its defensive features, such as the maze-like pathways, strategically placed openings for archers and samurai, and steep stairs that could be easily defended.
The castle underwent a significant restoration from 2009 to 2015, during which time it was mostly covered in scaffolding and closed to the public. Today, visitors can explore the castle’s many levels and admire the intricate architectural details, including the ornate roof tiles, wooden carvings, and intricate latticework.
Himeji Castle is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in Japanese history, architecture, or culture. It is open to visitors year-round, except for certain days during the year when it is closed for maintenance.
