Okinawa Prefecture Introduction
Okinawa-ken, or Okinawa Prefecture, is a prefecture (administrative division) of Japan located in the southernmost part of the country. The prefecture consists of the Okinawa Islands, which are part of the Ryukyu Islands chain, and covers an area of 2,280 square kilometers.
The capital city of Okinawa Prefecture is Naha, which is also the largest city in the prefecture. Other major cities in the prefecture include Okinawa City, Urasoe, and Ginowan.
Okinawa is known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs, as well as its unique culture and history. The Okinawan people have their own distinct language and customs, and the prefecture has a rich history as the center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which existed from the 15th to the 19th century.
Today, Okinawa is home to many U.S. military bases and personnel, as well as a large tourism industry. The prefecture is also known for its healthy cuisine and long life expectancy, with many Okinawans living well into their 90s and even 100s.
