Melk Abbey Overview

Melk Abbey, also known as Stift Melk, is a Benedictine monastery located in the town of Melk, Austria. It is situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube River in the Wachau Valley, about 83 kilometers west of Vienna. The abbey is one of the most famous and iconic monastic sites in Austria and is renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture and picturesque setting.

The history of Melk Abbey dates back to the 11th century when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, and Bishop Altmann of Passau established a Benedictine monastery on the site. Over the centuries, the abbey underwent various renovations and expansions, with the most significant transformation occurring in the 18th century.

In the early 18th century, Abbot Berthold Dietmayr commissioned the construction of a grand Baroque abbey complex. The task was entrusted to the architect Jakob Prandtauer, who designed an impressive structure that combined elements of the Baroque and Rococo styles. The construction work lasted from 1702 to 1736, resulting in the magnificent edifice that stands today.

The exterior of Melk Abbey features a symmetrical design, with a central dome and two towers flanking it. The façade is adorned with sculptures, statues, and intricate reliefs. The interior of the abbey is equally impressive, with lavishly decorated rooms, ornate stucco work, and magnificent frescoes painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger.

One of the most famous rooms in Melk Abbey is the Imperial Corridor, a long hall that showcases portraits of Austrian rulers. The abbey also houses a remarkable library, containing a vast collection of medieval manuscripts, early printed books, and other valuable works. The Marble Hall, the Abbey Church, and the Abbey Museum are other notable highlights.

Melk Abbey continues to function as a Benedictine monastery, with approximately 30 monks living and working there. It also serves as an educational institution, with a gymnasium (high school) and a monastic school within its premises. The abbey attracts numerous visitors each year who come to admire its architectural beauty, explore its historical treasures, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Visitors to Melk Abbey can take guided tours to explore the various parts of the complex and learn about its rich history. The abbey is open to the public, and it is advisable to check the official website for the most up-to-date visiting information, including opening hours and any COVID-19-related guidelines.
