A Century-Long Tradition: The Army-Navy Football Game

December 9, 2023

Home Field Glory

In my football-centric family, the annual clash between the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy is the pinnacle of excitement. The Army-Navy Game, a time-honored tradition since 1890, signifies the culmination of the college football season and a spirited rivalry steeped in military pride.

Rivalry Rooted in Tradition

The enduring rivalry mirrors the banter between military branches, with Army poking fun at Navy’s perceived poshness and everyone taking a playful jab at the Air Force. Despite the spirited rivalry, there’s a shared respect among servicemembers, a sentiment echoed in my household’s spirited “Go Army, Beat Navy” refrains.

A Family’s Football Journey

Growing up in an Army family, supporting the team has been a constant, even during Navy’s fourteen-year winning streak. However, everything changed on December 10, 2016, when Army secured its first victory in my lifetime. It was a triumphant moment that transcended the football field, a memory etched in the fabric of our military life.

Deployments and Distances

Life in an Army family often means upheaval, and deployments are a part of the package. Despite the challenges, the Army-Navy tradition remained a comforting constant. However, as we moved overseas, time zones made live viewing impractical. Still, the game’s score-checking ritual persisted, grounding us in the familiar amid change.

Tradition Transcends Places

Military life is marked by change, yet certain rituals provide a comforting anchor. Whether it’s the familiarity of commissaries or the shared joy of pizza and movie nights, these rituals persist across bases. Even as I’ve ventured into college life, the Army-Navy game remains a cherished link to my roots, a touchstone connecting me to my family and childhood.

Beyond Football Fandom

I won’t label myself a die-hard football fan today. Last year, the game played on mute while “Die Hard” took center stage. It’s not about the spectacle; it’s about reconnecting with my past and family in this bustling season. And yes, it’s also about one simple, resounding chant: Beat Navy.
