At a press conference on Sunday, Palaszczuk stated, “Queensland is in good shape, which is why now is the time for me to leave.” The premier plans to officially step down next week, leaving parliament at the end of the month. The successor, currently contested among Steven Miles, Shannon Fentiman, and Cameron Dick, is yet to be decided.

Palaszczuk, who was initially dubbed the ‘accidental premier,’ expressed her endorsement for Steven Miles as her successor, believing he “will make an excellent premier.” The decision, she emphasized, lies with her colleagues.

Reflecting on her political journey, Palaszczuk highlighted her leadership from a mere seven-member opposition to being the first woman in Australia to be re-elected as premier. She led the first majority woman cabinet in the country.

The premier revealed that the decision to retire crystallized during a holiday with her partner, emphasizing the need for a break. She stated, “Renewal is a good thing,” referring to the changes witnessed during the recent national cabinet meeting.

Palaszczuk, emotionally sharing her decision, acknowledged her family’s support and expressed gratitude. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described her as “a Labor hero” and commended her policy achievements.

The resignation marks the end of an era, making ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr the last remaining state or territory leader from the peak pandemic period. Palaszczuk’s legacy is recognized across political lines, with both praise and respect from various leaders. The next Queensland election is scheduled for October next year.

This unexpected development leaves many pondering the future political landscape in Queensland and the broader implications for Australian politics.
