Kyoto’s Culture and Heritage


Kyoto-shi is the official name of the city of Kyoto, Japan. It is located in the Kansai region on the island of Honshu and is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture. Kyoto is known for its rich history and cultural heritage, and was the imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years, from 794 to 1868. The city is home to numerous temples, shrines, and other historic sites, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and is a popular tourist destination. Kyoto is also known for its traditional arts and crafts, such as pottery, weaving, and lacquerware, as well as its cuisine, which includes dishes like kaiseki ryori and Kyoto-style sushi.
