Afghanistan: Asian LDC, Poorest

Afghanistan is one of the 9 countries in Asia that are classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs) by the United Nations. The other Asian LDCs are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Timor-Leste, and Yemen.

Of these countries, Afghanistan is often considered the poorest country in Asia, with a GDP per capita (PPP) of around $2,000 in 2020, according to the World Bank. This is due to a variety of factors, including decades of conflict, political instability, poor infrastructure, and a weak economy.

Despite these challenges, Afghanistan has made progress in some areas in recent years, such as improvements in health and education outcomes. However, the country still faces significant development challenges, particularly in the areas of poverty reduction, job creation, and infrastructure development.
